3 billion people (almost half the worlds population) get 20% or more of their daily protein from fish
Natural services provided from the ocean = $21 TRILLION annually
350 million jobs relate to marine industry
180 million directly related to fisheries, representing $190 billion in global trade value
Within this issue, why are small scale fishing issues important?
There are 36 million fishers in the world of which over 90% work in small-scale nearshore fisheries
And they account for more than half of the global catch
Over 60-85% of our oceans are critically overfished -- so nearly if not all of the nearshore environments
Much of the impact happening in the under-resourced developing tropics where food security is already an issue.. it’s a humanitarian issue, not just environmental issue.
